I just saw a news report and they were interviewing a family that actually went on outings looking for lost pennies and coins. There were several people on there that do this on a regular basis. They reported that this family made around $1100. in a matter of three years. Pretty good for picking up a few pennies along the way. So what about you? Do you pick up change when you see it laying at your feet? Do you go on outings in search of this loose change that others have just thrown away?
[question posted by JenInTN]
responses and comments:
I pick them up, but I don't go looking for them, I don't walk well enough to do that. But if I see one, I will step out of my way to get it. [ElicBxn]
I haven't thought of going on a hunt for them really. I wouldn't have imagined you could find that many but now that I think about it,I guess you could. I do pick change up if I see it too. [JenInTN]
if its a quarter then yeah! Maybe any coin that is silver. But a penny probably not! lol [christinep312]
That's what one or two people on the news report said. A lot of them said they would though. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you'l have good luck...Give that penny to a friend then your luck will never end ! When I find a penny I do pick it up and give it to a friend whilst quoting the above. :)x [Sammy_pink]
Is that really true? [kent_help2smile]
hi Jen I dont go on outings just for finding these Coins but if I see a coin on the ground of course I pick it up. I also do save this small change of mine in a coffee pad box and once a year we go to the bank and put that cash on our savings account. [book1962]
I save my change too. Once a month I empty out the change purse in my jar. Sometimes I use it for my kids'lunch..the quarters that is. I'll pick up change on the ground too but I haven't went Hunting for it either. Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
i don't go on outings but i will pick up change if i see it. [ANTIQUELADY]
Hi jo! I haven't been on any outings either. I'm like you..if I see it,I'll pick it up. Thanks. [JenInTN]
I always pick up change and put it in my piggy bank. [missybear]
Hi missy! I do too. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
I have never gone out looking for coins laying on the ground but if I happen to come across one then I will pick it up. When I was a kid I loved to find coins laying on the ground and I was always finding them but now I don't think I pay enough attention since I don't really find any that often. I might start paying more attention though if it can add up to that amount of money!!! [alyssakenzie]
That is a lot isn't it..for picking up change. They do go hunting for it though..a family of 4 or 5 it looked like. They go to the park and scatter..lol..One lady said she looked in the candy bar and gum boxes at the checkout counter in qickie stores and had found a handfull of change! Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
yes i pick them if and then put in to charitys [mkmoney]
That's really nice. do you go on change hunts or just pick up what you see? [JenInTN]
I usually do pick up coins when I see them lying around. It may not seem like a lot of money, but it adds up over time. Every time I have some change that I find, I put it into a jar, and after about a year of doing it, I had about one hundred dollars altogether in it. [lightningatdusk]
Hi lightningdusk! I agree it could add up over time. I think I will look a little closer in parking lots as I'm going to my car. Maybe I will do it for 6 months and see how much I can find. Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
hello jenintn wow, that is awesome how those family members found $1100.00 in just three years like that laying around on the streets and the sidewalks. lol but to answer your question, if i see any money at all wherever that i might happen to go, yes, i pick it up and bring it home with me. lol i usually do not spend any pennies at all. i have started on my third penny container that i have displayed on my fireplace in the living room. i have two big Glass containers that are full of pennies sitting in there and my new penny jug is a coca-cola bottle that is tall and it is plastic instead of glass. i sure hope that it will hold the weight of the pennies when it gets fuller. also, i have all of my other spare change and when it is time for me to go get my hair styled again, then i roll up my change and i usually have enough money to go get my hair done with it. spare change adds up faster than a person might think that it would. take care and have a beautiful afternoon. [TnWoman]
I cash in my spare change from time to time and use it for little extras too. That's alot of pennies you have TnWoman!I wouldn't be able to stand it..lol..I would want to cash them in and see haow much I had. I'm good to have one jar. It is amazing that family found that much money just laying around.lol I think I will pay closer attention and see how much I can gather in a few months. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
I pick up quarters only no pennies they are always so dirty and i don't think its worth a penny to get sick. [bangingsim]
Thanks for responding. If they were dirty I might think twice about picking them up too. Take care. [JenInTN]
I do have a habit of picking up coins I see laying on the ground I don't have outings or anything like that though. This is the first time I have heard of families going on an outing to search for coins. It really isn't a bad idea. And finding $1,100 in 3 years is a lot for just finding it on the ground. Thank you for sharing this that is interresting. [patriciaqualls]
Hi patriciaqualls! I thought it was pretty neat too. I have heard of people hunting aluminum cans but never coins.lol. It wouldn't be a bad idea if you lived in a big city with alot of parking lots and quick stop stores. I pick up what I see but I've never went coin hunting either. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
earn $1100 buy picking up pennies and coins? wow they must be very lucky or a lot of attention to the stuff on the street to find so mayn coins. I pick it up usually but spend it as soon as possible. [mermaidivy]
Hi mermaidivy! They would actually go on family outings hunting loose coins. They had about 4 Kids that went in different directions to find them. I pick up change when I see it too. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
I don't go looking for money but when I see some on the ground I will stoop over and pick it up, even a penny. I have a change purse that I have part of it just for pennies and when I see them on the ground I pick them up and put them in that part. So when I go Shopping for anything and the bill comes out to $?.29 I will pay them with 9 pennies. I find that in a month I probably have picked up 100 pennies and used them this way. So 100 pennies is only a dollar but every bit helps. And sometimes I have even found nickles and dimes and quarters and the very odd time I will find a loony. Then I am in heaven.happy hehehe I am also now learning about coupons and using them a lot these days. I figure with the loose change I pick up and with the coupons I use, including the ones I get from Co-Op every time I buy my gas there, I am saving around $50 a month. So with that and the earnings I make online, around $70 a month, I have around $120 a month extra that I use for my entertainment, like going to a movie or out for supper. Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend, Have a good mylotting day, Chris [chrislotz]
Hi chrislotz! Very nice! Those are impressive savings. Kind of pays for the extras. Your right that every bit helps and although it may not seem like much at the time..it really adds up. Thanks for sharing! [JenInTN]
Perhaps now i have an excuse to be less lazy and pick up more coins. I do, every now and again, but only if it's a quarter. [Katashi]
LOL..It can add up even if it is pennies. No more excuses..lol..j/k Thanks for responding and take care! [JenInTN]
I always do pick up coins (any coin for that matter) whether it's still of legal tender or not, and keep it. it has become a habit for me to get coins or money laying on the ground. I don't actually look for them. I just get what I see. I find myself lucky everytime I find coins. it feels good too. [dorisday1971]
You can never tell what your getting either..it my be a penny but it may be worth much more than that if it's a certain mint. I don't go hunting either but I'm by no means above picking them up. Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
I do not go exactly looking for the cash, but if I see a coin or a bunch of coins on the street, or in the snow, or in a mud puddle, I will pick them up. I have no idea what I made dong so, because it goes into the collection plate at Church, so I feel that God has caused that person's hole to rip in his pant pocket, or the money dropped miraculously from the sky. Now no pilot has landed and asked if I found a lost quarter or something. Oh I wonder how long it took for that family to make that $1100? [suspenseful]
Hi suspenseful! The news report said it was over a three year period of time. That's a while but it's a lot of money for loose change. It's nice that you donate your findings. There was another responder that said they give their findings to charity. I think I may try and save found change for a few months and see how much I find. Maybe I will give it to a good cause too. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
I saw this on the news. I have picked up coins I've seen on the ground. I don't go on outings just to look for coins. I think that's pretty good that they have found that much money. [scarlet2000]
Oh yeah, I saw her too. I had forgotten about her until you mentioned it. You know how cnn headline news is they will show the same report about twenty times a day. [scarlet2000]
I try and pick up all the change I see on the ground. During the winter it's kind of hard though because a lot of it ends up sticking to the ground because of the snow and ice. However, when I can pick up the change and my hands aren't full I try and pick up every thing that I can. I figure that it does all add up eventually. I know a penny here and there doesn't seem like much, but eventually, you can acquire quite a bit of money if you really pay attention to the ground when walking. [highflyingxangel]
Heyya highflyingxangel! It does make it hard to find any in the winter time. I think I will start paying more attention when I go grocery shopping or stopping for gas. I'm gonna start a six month project and see how much I can gather by just picking up the change I see laying on the ground. It really can add up! [JenInTN]
Nope I don't pick up coins. It gives me bad luck after wards. But I see dollar bill or paper bills I pick it up. No bad luck or what will happen to me. [kent_help2smile]
I see..I once heard that the US $2 bills were bad luck. Another thing I heard was if the penny wasn't on heads it was bad lick. I don't know if it's true for me or not but I do still pick up change when I see it. Is that the only thing that brings you bad lick or are there other things for you? Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
I pick up change if I find it. Som people are funny though. I was in Wal mart the other day and standing right behind a man, the cashier handed him his change and he dropped a dime and a penny and I picked it up and said to the man "Here you dropped this." He looked at me like I had 3 heads or something and said "I didn't drop it." I was so stunned I just sood there and he walked off. When the lady rang my order up it was $23.11 so I just used it to pay for my stuff! LOL [fasttalker]
Heyya fasttalker! I have seen people drop change and leave it too. They even watch where it fell and just walk off.lol..Guess they didn't need it huh? Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
Well if I happen to see a coin laying on the ground yes sure ill pick it up I think most people do, but I dont go around looking for them I usually just find them by accident I never actually look for them in public or anything.happy [apples99]
Hi apples! I never realy thought about "hunting" it either. I usually don't pay alot of attention either. I'm going to though. At least for a while just to see. Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
I pick up coins all the time when I spot it. In fact, I picked up a penny and a dime today. I usually find at least one coin every time I go to town. When I was a teenager, there were a couple of times I looked for coins, but I usually don't have much luck when I'm intentional in my coin acquisitions. [BenjaminBufordBlue]
Heyya BenjaminBufordBlue! Eleven cents for looking down is not bad.lol. It will be my luck if looking I won't find a thing either. Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
Of course will pick up. Alas, the net amount picked up over the last 3 years still less than $1 oh. Guess the cleaners picked up all the money while sweeping the streets. [scheng1]
I would say the drivers are cashing in for sure.lol..Gotta get there before them I guess. Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
Hey Jen! I sometimes pick up lose change that I see lying on the ground, but not always. But, now that I read this I just might start to pick up every penny that I see! It is true that coins do add up after awhile! I would never have thought to go on an outing to purposely pick up coins, but now maybe I should start thinking about doing it! [Opal26]
Hi Opal! I would have never thought about coin hunting either. I hardly ever pay attention while walking to my car from the store. I am going to start though. I'm going to start a special jar for "found in public change" just to see. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
I feel it is my duty to pick up any kind of coins to avoid been stepped on by others. Image of great people and scenery spots of the country are printed on them, this is to show our respect to them, what is more, you got a small profit. So everyone pls pick up any coin you find on the ground, if you don't need them, donate to the charity. But I don't prefer to look for these coins. [mylt08]
I hadn't thought of it that way but thanks for adding that. Take care. [JenInTN]
I will most gratefully pick up those coins to put into any donation box nearby (had did it many times and most frequently in fast food restaurants) If there is none, then is my lucky day to have extra coins in my pocket. LOL! [siongkai]
That's nice of you to donate the coins to charity. And like you said..no boxes around..the pocket can be a nice charity too. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
I pick up pennies, nickels, dimes and once in awhile a quarter off the ground or off the floor at places I go to. I don't go around search for coins! I usually save up alot of my change and put in my christmas club account! [blue65packer]
Now that's a good idea! If I started now I might have some extra money for Christmas! I don't know that I would go on outings to hunt them but I am going to start a special jar just for the coins I find. I might just use it for a holiday. Thanks for the idea! [JenInTN]
If I see one in my vicinity, and I'm not surrounded by people, or walking, I will always stoop and grab loose change on the ground. I made 85 cents in one day, just by picking up the change I found -- 5 pennies, 2 quarters, 2 nickels and 2 dimes. [breepeace]
Wow! That's not shabby for just seeing dropped change! I'm really going to be paying attention now.lol..Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
Yes. I will pick it up, why not. It is negotiable. If some other time I can see another coin it will be a savings fro me. Lol. I can give this to much needy people someday. [ShanLhey]
Hi ShanLhey! I will pick them up too. Giving to charity is a nice thing to think about doing with your findings. Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
Yes I do, just last month I found a tiny little copper penny and looked it up on the internet and it turned out to be real and was a US tiny penny worth about $8.00 at coin shops, so I showed it to my sister, (who collects coins), and she gave me $10.00 for it! What a lucky find! [xbrendax]
w00t That was an awesome find! I bet you'd be happy to pick up a few more for a profit like that! I know I would. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
I do pick up a coin if I see one on the ground, I can't help it! I have never gone looking for them; it's an idea with the economic status at the moment! (LOL)lol My father always finds money, jewellery, you name it, he found a hammer once! He walks a lot and that is probably why I don't find as much. When I was a kid we used to go and look for empty Bottles to take to the shop and get some cash. I will go walking I think, I need the exercise and a few pennies as well! happy [paula27661]
Good for you paula! I think in these economic times we should be more open to different means of a few extra dollars. If your taking a walk, why not see if there's some lost change. I see people all the time collecting cans. I even do so in my home. I haven't been on outings for neither coins or cans but who knows..maybe I will. Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
I don't go on special outings looking for it but I do pick up coins if I find them on the ground. I use my debit card an awful lot and very rarely have cash. When I do pay in cash, I save all my change. I save it in a big jug all year. When summer rolls around, I cash it in and my daughter and I do something with it. It is usually around 300.00...so we have a good little adventure. Once it was well over 600.00 and we went away for a couple of days and had a great adventure! It all adds up. [sid556]
That's a great example of how a little change can add up to a whole lot! When I was younger I remember being completly broke! I had a change jar and needed some milk and basics. So I grabbed out the penny rolls and began rolling it up. I had other coins too and rolls for them as well. I had a little over $200.00! I couldn't believe it and that change really saved the day at the time. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
wow thats nice! accumulated money from pennies picked up along the way. personally i never do that because i am shy if other people seeing me picking up pennies or coins on the floor. weird but with your sharing i might have another thought. [roselynm1023]
It would be nice to have a couple of hundred extra dollars a year for sure! I'm a little shy too but I do it anyway.lol..Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
whenever i see loose change i pick them up.. though i do not have time to roam around looking for loose changes, but still, a penny or a cent still counts so if i see one lying around, i will definetely pick it up and save place it otgether with other loose changes. [JOIEMARVIC]
Hi Joiemarvic! I don't have alot of time for outings either. I have a couple of little girls that keep me running and a fulltime job that wears me out..lol..I am going to start looking a little more when I'm out though. Thanks for your reponse. [JenInTN]
Hi Jenn really a nice Hobby well, i never went out to collect/pick coins on the road and infact as its not in my mind so i dont notices in regular life. happy but sure i heard about cashier u used not to pay pennies/changes to customers, mostly people were not bothered and if some one ask, she pays them, and just bt doing this she made a LOT morwe than US$1100 in three month.wink [cupid74]
Well, u r right, snmart little move by her, she might have some ethical grounds for it but i like the idea of bowl for change at stores Kool [cupid74]
Yes, i pick the coins laying on the ground and give return to any street BEGGAR. Bcoz if coins lying at groud they no use and possible will be go at nullahs or guttar, so its better to use someone and get help to poor person. I really dont use for myself that lying coins but give to poor person to use and make some stuff. [rakeshlalwani]
That's a very nice gesture. I'm sure they appriciate it very much. Thanks for sharing. [JenInTN]
Usually I will not pick up money that I see lying on the ground unless it is at least a quarter. Since it really does not seem to add up if it is a smaller amount I figure why bother. But to show people that do do this, and have earned over $1100 now that is pretty cool. I know I have found money as big as $1 or more lying on the ground and have picked that up, but never small change. [KrauseHome]
Thanks for responding! Often times poeple don't pick up the smaller change. I was amazed that those people had found that much money! [JenInTN]
wow? they do? but yes i do pick up loose coins.. [jazel_juan]
LOL..That's what I said. I would have never thought of it. Thanks for reponding. [JenInTN]
Instinctively, I will pick up coins or currency notes, if they are lying on the road. Firstly, I'll look around, if any claimant to the same is there.........and if I find any claimant, I'll return the same to him and if despite my sincere efforts I'm unable to find a claimant to it, I'll pocket the same..............LOL!lol dpk P.S. -Congrats, this discussion of yours figures in today's 'Mylot digest', so you are likely to get many responses. [dpk262006]
happyhappyrolleyes [dpk262006]
...I only pick up dimes, quarters or half dollars... [Chocobear]
Alot of people pass up the pennies. I would definately prefer to find the silver ones.lol..Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
I just pick up loose change lying on the ground but I don't go on trips or outings looking for dropped coins. I dunno if alot of people drop change. LoL. [chunijole]
Hi chunijole! I haven't been coin hunting either. You would be surprised at the people that just drop and leave their pennies. Often times I think people think of them as more of a bother than value. Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
I never seem to find anything :( But if I do I usually pick it up. I pick up coppers if they're in a building on the floor but not on the road 'cause they are really dirty. I always pick up gold ones (btw I'm talking about euro) My dad picks them up and he buys coffee once a week with the money so it does work. And I remember at school a few years back we had a copper trail for charity and everyone in the school brought in their coppers and we made like 2000 euro! Just with coppers! Then again that was like 900 students... But still! [lolastevens]
If I see a coin on the ground I will pick it up. Even if it is a penny it goes in my change jar. I save change and once per year I cash it in at the bank and it is spending money for us usually for vacation but since times are tough right now it may be used for necessities real soon here. I don't know that I would spend an outing looking for change but i don't pass it by either when I do see it. I think that it all adds up, we are here and just earn a few cents per day, well anyway I do, so yeah I would pick up a lone nickel. [ryzach]
Hi ryzach! I don't pass it up either. I don't save my change for anything in oarticular but there are alot of people that have responded they save theirs for a vacation. I think I may set a goal myself like that. Thank you for the response. [JenInTN]
only if the penny not on tail. yeah silly but they say if it's on tail then it will bring you bad luck, this why i belive in this. i was at a place vacumming my car out and picked up a penny on tail. then next thing i stepped in lip stick and got it in my car [syankee525]
I have heard that too.lol..I also heard that two dollar bills are bad luck too. Have you heard that? [JenInTN]
Hi JetInTN, How are you? Yes, I do indeed pick up coins lying on the ground. I also have this uncanny ability to find the little coins in the dark, even though I would describe my eyesight as far from perfect. Firstly, I pick up coins for luck. The saying I grew up with was: "See a Penny, Pick it Up!, All Day Long You'll have Good Luck!" Secondly, I see it as a sign of wastage and ignorance, when I see more and more coins thrown away and ignored. It has also not escaped my notice that you find more small change, when the economy is booming! ... The only drawback is hygiene, but I always clean my hands afterwards .... Wishing you a very good week. Umart [umart13]
Hi umart! I'm doing well thank you. I hope you are the same. I have heard that saying also. I think that your right about it being wasteful. Change certainly does add up. Thanks for your response and I hope you have a nice week too. [JenInTN]
I only pick up those I happen to see but I don't go looking for them at all. I have found alot over the years but not that much. I have also found dollar bills and once found a 20 dollar bill while walking. It surely made my day if not week. [mtdewgurl74]
I seldom pick up coins or other paper currency with small face amout.Because i feel ashame for doing it. [zandy985186]
Hi zandy! Thanks for your honesty. I'm shy about it to sometimes. Take care. [JenInTN]
I usually do pick up coins but I do not look for them. I just pick them up whenever I see them. I used to see a lot because I was a little kid that saw everything, but now I don't see any, if there are any, that is. I once found about two dollars in coins in a parking lot. Happy mylotting! [snam23]
It can be fun to find change as a child! I remember finding enough to buy my own candy once in the couch.LOL Not he same but when our a child change is change. Thanks for sharing. [JenInTN]
This can get a little embarrassing but I openly admit to picking up those penny coins and sticking them in my pocket! I have stopped doing this now but I guess I remember a saying on a film and I never forget that, this is how it goes: 'see a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck!' Well, this sounds crazy I know but whenever I saw a penny in the past I would remember this! That's quite a story though in relation to the family. I guess they found a strategy that actually works! Andrew [AndrewFreyne]
Hi Andrew!I think of that phrase when I see them too.lol..I think it must be a world-wide rhyme. I thought it was a pretty neat story too. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
Hard to believe that picking up coins can store such a big amount at last. Most of the time I won't pick up the coins on the street. As the coins don't have a big value. And I feel very embarrassed to pick them up from the street. I love China [youless]
Hi youless! Thank you for responding. Your not the only one that feels embarrassed to pick them up but it is true that they add up. Take care! [JenInTN]
I have done that several times and but not to that extent. Personally, it is a good habit to have a for it is rewarding. so i never pass a coin on the road. [catilda]
Hi catilda! I don't pass them up when I see them either. Thanks. [JenInTN]
I don't go out of my way for it, but if any peice of money catches my eye, I will take it. Sometimes I even pick up bottles on the ground so I can get the 5 cent deposit. [danrunsfast614]
There are a lot of ways to make extra money. I know of people that go on outings for cans to recycle. Thank you for the response. [JenInTN]
Maybe, but I wouldn't go out of my way, or go around looking for coins to pick up. Thats as aweful lot of bending to pick up $1100 which is about 500 a year. If I were going to to that, I'd rather type in here and make the same! Have a great day. [di1159]
I do prefer mylot for sure..lol..I do pick up change but I don't hunt it. Thanks. [JenInTN]
Wow!! 3 years? that's a long way to make a good money from loose coins? Well, I am enjoying the loose coins every now and then because I am using it to buy items on the dollar store. Yes, I picked up coins laying on the ground. I am not going around to look for them but when I see something on the ground, I picked it up. We have a small can in the house where we put our loose coins but it will not stay there for long because I keep on using them to buy something. Lol.happyhappy [Bebs08]
Hi Bebs! I dip into my change for stuff too...lol..mostly for snack money at work or for the kids' lunches when I don't have cash on me. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
i pick them up when i see them but i do not make a special attempt to go look for them. i do not have that much time on my hands first of all and there is no guarantee you will find any so it seems a waste of precious time to me. i need the money no doubt just like most people but i just cannot see going around and looking for loose change. [mikeysmom]
It's a good point you make about the outings. What if you spend time and don't find anything. Time is an issue for me too. I don't have a lot to spare either. I think that family made it like a game for them and their children. Family time and hunting coins. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
I do pick up change whenever I see it laying on the ground somewhere. Another penny I get, helps me getting closer to another dollar. LOL I don't go on outings looking for it but whenever I see change in a parking lot or wherever I do pick it up. [SuzyQ12]
Heyya SuzyQ! It is one penny closer to a dollar and before you know it your working on your second dollar.lol..Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
Hi. If I see coins laying around and most certainly will pick them up. It doesn't matter if it's only one cent, it is still one cent that I didn't have before. I once found about $2.00 laying on the street in coins. And once I found a $20.00 bill. So, sometimes it's good to look down when you're walking around on the street. [cmalvarez20]
It does sometimes pay well to look down! You are living proof. I will be doing so a bit more often. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
I do pick up any money I find. I also put any stray money I find in the house in my to be deposited bag. I'm always finding money in the dryer after I do the wash. I've started depositing the change once a month into my bank account. This month I deposited $2.00 that's I've collected just here and there in the house. Every little bit helps. I've never planned change collection trips, but it sounds from this article that it can be a money maker. I'm going to have to keep my eyes on the ground from now on when I go on outings. Who knows how much extra money I can end up collecting. I've seen on a blog where someone is keeping track of their found money. So far this year they've found 23 cents. [grammpaula]
Oh...I can cash in big on doing the laundry..lol..I think I'm going to start a seperate change jar and see how much I run across in a couple of months. Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
Yes, I pick them up. I never thought about making a special trip to look for them, though. [Bd200789]
Hi Bd200789! It would've never crossed my mind either. Thanks. [JenInTN]
LoL ~ you betcha I do! I used to keep a pretty huge coin jar in the house and I would just dump my coins in it for rainy days. It really came in handy one day as well. As my bank account was low and I didn't have any reserve cash on me. Then it dawned on me that I had the stash of coins at home. Well surprisingly that stash of coins came out to be a little over $25, just what I needed to go out to the Movies with some friends and be able to hang out a bit after the movies. It was fun then. This was before I got married. I don't keep the coins in a jar anymore, but it is tempting. [hdjohnson]
Heyya hdjohnson!! It can come in so handy, that jar of change. It has bailed me out a couple of times throughout the years. I still keep a change jar. I'm gonna start another one to research this money finding thing too.lol..Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
I sure do, not just pennies either. I kept a log for 30 days just to see how much I had collected. It was about $12. Talk about law of attraction, if you look for it-it was come to you. It was quite fun, I even found a $5.00 bill on the ground waiting for me. [yparson]
Good for you! $12 in a month is not bad at all for just looking down and picking up a few coins. A $5 bill too!? Thanks for sharing! [JenInTN]
I never go out to look for them, but always pick them when I see them. You never know when they come in handy. PLus, they say that "who does not pick up a penny, is not worth a penny". My daughter learned from me to pick up the pennies, and her friends were making fun of her. When they wanted to buy something toeat, they were short a penny - my daughter gave them the penny she found and from then on, they never laughed at her. They even started to pick up the pennies by themselves. I always have in my pockets fe pennies, and they always help. I'm grateful every time I find one. [ladynetz]
I guess those Children learned an important lesson from your daughter. Money doesn't come so easily and we should all be thankful when we get a few coins we didn't even have to work for. Thanks for sharing that story. [JenInTN]
yes all the time iam always finding coins and i pick them up and save them. [annjilena]
Hi annjilena! I do too. Thanks for responding. After all, it is money. [JenInTN]
Nope, Not for me but I think that is a great idea because this is workable. It is happening in my country which they have made 5 figure with just 1 cent. Do you believe it?...lol. It is true. Happy Mylotting. [Hvaniday1]
I can believe it..coin collectors have thousands of dollars in just a few small coins sometimes. I'm by no means educated in the worth of old leagal tender so unless someone told me it was worht something I probably wouldn't know unless it looked very different. I'd say it's like that for a lot of people. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
I don't go on outings to find lost coins, but I will pick it up if I happen to see it. Sometimes it makes me feel like a begger, but I see it as change for my kids to put in their piggy banks. One day we were at a dock getting ready to go on a boat ride and my son found a 20 dollar bill laying under some dirt. I couldn't believe it!! So then of course he wanted to walk the whole shore to see if he could find some more. happy [messageme]
You shouldn't feel like a begger my friend. You'd pick money if it grew on trees..what's the difference if it's on the ground. I bet those kids love to feed their piggies. Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
If I see one lying on the ground then yes I will pick it up. I dont go out of my way looking for one though. I remember that story and was amazed at how much they accumulated in a matter of three years. I save lose change and use it toward a Christmas gift for our family but after seeing this story ir has made me really want to save for the long haul. [snoopy04]
Me too..lol..It really added up for them! Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
I do pick up money if I see it but I don't go looking for it. Money is money after all... [dawnald]
I'm not going to turn up my nose at it, that's for sure! [dawnald]
I saw that too. My family picks up money when we see it. Usually it goes into my daughter's change jar. We have never just gone out and looked for it though. [Ruthep]
Hi Ruthep! It can add up quickly in the change jar! It was a neat little news report huh? I would have never thought of coin hunting.lol..Thanks for responding! [JenInTN]
If I find on, I will pick it up. But I do not intend to go outing just for that activity........it is time consuming and I have a better thing to do. That just my 2 cents.. rasp BR.b [djonghs]
LOL..it would be time consuming and I doubt I'll be going on any outings but I will be looking closer. Thanks for responding friend! [JenInTN]
If I see them, I do stop and pick them up. But I don't specifically go out looking for them. I figure if I find a penny every day, that's almost $4... [reinydawn]
Hi reinydawn! Same for me. I won't go out looking but I do pick them up. Thanks for the response! [JenInTN]
Hi JeninTN. My instinct always makes me pickup coins laying somewhere, as long as I know no one owns them. However I will not go on outings in search of loose coins. [brady2moss]
It is strange, it's like I'm drawn by this single coin at the side of the road, even though it's just a loose change. You're welcome jeninTN :o) [brady2moss]
I may not be planning trips out to search of pennies or coins. But if I ever come across them, I will pick them up. In fact, that is what got me started on a program called "Double your way to a Million". It is a fun thing to do. Not easy, but fun to do. [ahgong]
I do pick up change and money on the ground while walking and such but I dont go out specifically looking for the money. I also take money out of my couch cushions! (i remember growing up mom would have us hunt the couch cushions so she'd have enough to buy a carton of milk at times) [saundyl]
Amazing what you can find in those couch cushions.lol..anything you haven't been able to find..look there..I remember finding change there as a child too. Thanks fpr the response. [JenInTN]
Well I do not go out searching for money but if I see money on the ground, then I will pick it up. If it is a large amount of money then I will take it to the police because it is possible thatthe person who lost the money will make a report to the police. However, if it is a smaller amount, then I put it into one of the charity "poor boxes". It is not my money at all and I know that the charities can always use any donations that they receive to help the poor and needy. Once I was one of those who were poor and although I did not ask for or receive help from the charities, the situation could have been very different. whistle At the same time, my partner did have to seek help from them a couple of times after her marriage broke up and before we met. She had 4 children to care for, a mortgage to pay, no child support from her ex-husband and could earn limited amount of money due to the hours she could work with the children. Yes when she was not working she did receive the pension but it didn't cover the mortgage all the time. So I say to people who find money "if you are not desperately in need of it, think of others who need a helping hand". [oldboy46]
Thank you oldboy! We have all needed a hand at one time or another and I agree if you don't need it you should certainly donate. I have had some pretty tough times to and could've used some help myself. There is always someone out there with a bit of a tougher time. Thanks again and take care. [JenInTN]
Hi, I didn't get the entire story.where they go in search of lost pennies?well till today i am only succeeded thrice. and all the 3 times i have donated it to some charity box...:) [sunil_008]
I thought that's the best way to spend it...:) [sunil_008]
Yes i do any money is better than no money, it adds up after a while like you said about that family, it's rough now a day the prices of everything are increasing [fit4lifein07]
It surely does add up. I would have never thought about an outting. Thanks for responding. [JenInTN]
Hi JenInTN I started a discussion on pennies which led me to your similar one and i just had to comment on yours. I think it's a great idea that people are actually doing it together! If i could get someone to go along with me... i would, as the only thing that prevents me from picking them up is incase i get ridiculed. Maybe being in a group wouldn't look as bad, you could pretend you were picking them up for charity LOL not so far from the truth though, right now i feel like i am a charitble case lol. Alice :) [Aliceinwebland]
Hi Aliceinwebland! I know how you feel. It could be alot of fun if you did have a group to go with. This family made it an outing and really enjoyed doing it. They made it like a treasure hunt for their children and made extra money at the same time..lol..can't beat that! Thanks for the response and I'll check out your discussion. [JenInTN]
only if its not a penny or if it's laying on tail. that suppose to bring bad luck [syankee525]
hisyankee i never knew that! why not a penny? Alice :) [Aliceinwebland]
I will never go out with the intention of picking up coins. But if I find a coin lying on the road I will definitely pick it up since we consider money as Goddess Lakshmi here in our country. We can never allow anyone to disrespect it by stepping on it.I have uploaded the image of Goddess Lakshmi for you. Can you observe the golden coins pouring down Her hands. [balasri]
Yep!!! hehe!!! I'm guilty!!! But I will just get it if no one is really there. hehe I'm kinda shy. haha [carlo_martin_soria]
There are a lot of people that have said they are shy to pick it up if there are others around. Thanks for the response. [JenInTN]
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but I know of people who go to popular beaches in summer in late afternoons/very early mornings and sift through the sand with sieves, especially up against the retaining walls a lot of beaches have. I have also heard of them fossicking with Metal detectors. Apparently they can make an income pretty much as good as the unemployment payment, and considering many of them are on that payment, it's not a bad living. Lash [grandpa_lash]
No one has mentioned that but I'm glad you have. I have often seen people on the beach and the surrounding areas of it with metal detectors. I can imagine in places like that there are a lot of coins that are dropped and left. Sometimes people just don't want to be bothered by trying to find a single coin when they drop them. I can see how others could profit from this. Thanks for the input. [JenInTN]
